for the Latino Community Scholarships and Internships Available

Course: The Latin American Cancer Research Coalition (LACRC) is sponsoring the "Social Marketing for the Latino Community" course, which will be offered by the Georgetown University School of Business. Professor Alan Andreasen, a leading social marketing practitioner and scholar will teach the course during the week of June 9-13, 2008. Additionally, there will be guest speakers from among Washington's leading social marketing programs to present during classes. The course can be taken for 2 credits through the Georgetown School of Summer and Continuing education. The goal of this program is to build health promotion training opportunities for minority researchers and students in Latino health.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships. This weeklong workshop is designed to provide both introductory and advanced training in applying the latest of social marketing concepts and tools from around the world. While emphasis will be on fundamentals of social marketing, there will be particular attention to Latino target audiences. This workshop will also take a new approach to the field that will emphasize both upstream and downstream approaches to behavior change. We will look at how social marketing concepts and tools can be used to influence target audiences as well as policymakers, delivery partners, the media and others potentially involved in significant social change. Workshop sessions will be taught in English and will involve lecture discussions, case analyses, one-on-one advice and instruction, and group exercises. Participants will have many opportunities to bring up issues they grapple with thereby customizing the program to their needs.

The Social Marketing in Public Health Conference
Training Academy June 18-19, 2008

The University of South Florida, College of Public Health is offering its 18h Social Marketing in Public Health Conference in Clearwater Beach from June 18-21, 2008. The first two days comprise the Social Marketing Academy. The Academy blends didactic and experiential learning and provides participants intensive training in social marketing including:
- basic principles and practices associated with formative research and audience segmentation;
- conceptual and practical frameworks for marketing strategy development;
- social marketing’s approach to program development, and
- “thinking like a marketer”.
Case studies are used to illustrate how social marketing can be applied to the development of public health interventions. Participants are provided time to review a systematic logic model that they can then apply to program planning.
On Friday June 20th and Saturday, June 21st the full Conference is convened. Friday morning’s plenary sessions are followed by concurrent sessions that cover a range of social marketing topics. Following Saturday morning’s plenary sessions, participants may select from a variety of half-day training options, including focus group research, pretesting methods, evaluation of social marketing interventions, and marketing social marketing. Course participants usually include social marketers, CDC scholarship designees, program planners and administrators, health educators, health communication and health information specialists, researchers, academicians, and graduate students.

SOCIAL MARKETING IN PUBLIC HEALTH FIELD SCHOOL
Introduction to Social Marketing — 6/13-17

This course is designed to give students a thorough orientation to the discipline of social marketing and specific applications in public health. It is appropriate for current and future practitioners in the public health field. Class sessions will combine didactic presentations with group discussions and in-class exercises.
Consumer Behavior Theory — 6/13-17
Dr. Moya Alfonso
This course describes the application of behavioral science theories, concepts and methodologies to the understanding of behavior in the marketplace, and extends these to the area of health decision making. The focus is on decision making models, supplementing those derived from consumer behavior applications with those derived primarily from health behavior applications.
Focus Groups Research Strategies — 6/21-25
Dr. Richard Krueger
This course is an intensive overview of focus group procedures in the public and non-profit environment. Attention will be placed on question development, moderator skills, analysis strategies and planning critical logistical details of focus group interviews, and analyzing results of focus group interviews. The course will examine unique methodological characteristics of focus group interviews, identify emerging trends, and explore areas of appropriate and inappropriate use.
Public Sector & Non-Profit Marketing — 6/22-26
Mr. Jim Mintz
This course introduces students to concepts, techniques, case examples and illustrations needed to support and assist them in becoming first-rate non-profit and public sector marketers. Class time will be a mixture of lectures, discussions, in-class exercises and presentations as well as exposure to the real world of non-profit and public sector marketing.

Fourth Annual Summer Institute for Social Marketing & Health Communication
July 13-18, 2008 – Boston, MA
The week of July 13, 2008, Emerson College in Boston will host the Fourth Annual Summer Institute for Social Marketing & Health Communication. The goal of the Institute is to bring communication and creative professionals together to work in interdisciplinary teams that apply social marketing theory and principles to some of the biggest social issues of our time. The five and a half days of the Summer Institute include interactive lecture and discussion sessions, case study presentations, networking with distinguished guest lecturers, and group exercises.
The Director and lead instructor for the Institute is Lynda Bardfield, Technical Advisor in Strategic Behavioral Communication at Family Health International (FHI), who brings over two decades of commercial and social marketing experience. Tim Edgar, Director of the Graduate program in Health Communication at Emerson, is co-instructor. Tim’s background in behavioral science and audience research and Lynda’s background in creative leadership make this a week worth attending.

Partnerships, Proof and Practice - 2008 Non Profit and Social Marketing

The 5th International Nonprofit and Social Marketing Conference
will be hosted by the Centre for Health Initiatives (CHI) and set in the
grounds of the University of Wollongong. The chair is Professor Sandra
Jones, CHI Director.
The city of Wollongong is 80km south of Sydney, Australia and easily
accessible by road or rail. The city's population is nearly 200,000 and is
bordered by national parks, ocean beaches, and the beautiful Illawarra
escarpment.
The conference will highlight contemporary issues and
acheivements in social and nonprofit marketing with a particular
emphasis on bridging the gap between evidence and practice. A

The National Conference on Social Norms

The Call for Programs Deadline (March 21) is approaching for the National Conference on Social Norms, which will take place in San Francisco, July 20-22, 2008.
This meeting focuses on various aspects of implementing a social norms strategy and examines research, audience, data & innovations of the social norms approach. It is sponsored by the National Social Norms Institute at the University of Virginia, & The BACCHUS Network.
The conference planning committee invites submissions focused on, but not limited to, the following areas: research and data on effective social norms programs, innovative strategies to reach intended audiences and applications of the approach with public health and safety issues beyond alcohol (e.g., smoking, sexual assault and seat belt use).
